He knew the exact moment she entered the alley, and for a minute or so he was still thinking every man for himself. But he couldn't help but pity the poor girl; she was alone, with none of her gang members around, and the police were still chasing after her. If she didn't find cover soon, she'd be stuck in a cell all night. Growling at himself for this move that might cost him something big, he grabbed on to her bag, pulling her into the building with him.
"Getting in here," Fox said, exhasperated.
Still, he gave her a ghost of a smile. She seemed like a nice woman; she didn't mean any harm. He just hoped she realized the same was true for him.

Someone grabbed her bag, giving her a yank from behind, and it took all Tori had not to scream aloud. She was pulled into the building, her form disappearing from the alleyway before the police could spot her; her lungs constricted painfully in pure fear.
Tori twirled on her toes, her body spinning just enough so she could pull herself free from her bag. She couldn't risk having her back to the person, and she refused to let the bag around her shoulders constrict herin anyway should she have to run or fight. Especially considering it was still held by whoever had--
Fox had pulled her into safety.
She realized that only a second after her eyes adjusted to the lack of light. Her fear had been completely irrational, completely unneeded. The anthro she had just done business with had risked his own neck to get her away from the police.
"Thank you," she breathed, struggling to calm her pounding heart.

Fox grinned.
"Welcoming," he said, not commenting on her fearful reaction-- he knew no one would want to have something embaressing like that brought up. Instead, he moved to lean against the wall, before sliding down and sitting. He sat with a slight hunch, as if he had been slouching his entire life.
He held her bag up for her to take. "You are learning, piglets do not check buildings for filthy foreign scum," Fox murmured, grinning. He winked one slightly glowing eye, seeming a bit warmer now then he had been before. "Is good tip, no? Get you far in slums like this."

Tori took her bag when it was offered out, glancing down at it to try to hide her bright red face. That had been pretty...embarassing, to say the least. Granted, she knew why she had reacted so, but he didn't, and odds were he would judge her strictly on her reaction.
Joy and joyness.
"The police don't really care much for doing their job," Tori murmured, leaning against the opposite wall and sliding down, so she could sit. She glanced up at him, at his face, and couldn't stop the shiver that went down her spine at his eyes. "But, yes, is good tip."
She risked giving him a small smile, a spark of light appearing in her green eyes.

Fox chuckled, left ear twitching. "Voice is contagious, eh?" he asked, smiling amusedly over at her. He had figured by now she meant no malice in her joking. "Cannot be helping, you know. Only living in Mushroom Kingdom three years, not really bothering to learn language before coming here. Comrades and I figuring it out as we go."
He shrugged. He was grasping at straws now, trying to make casual conversation while still staying quiet enough so that anyone outside wouldn't hear them. "Wife is not liking it here, but... unable to be going back now. We are needing to keep children in mind."

Tori hadn't even realized she was "mocking" him until he made a comment, and her face blushed bright red. "I... I didn't mean to sound rude," she murmured, risking a glance up at his face. Her father's voice came back, hissing about how her mouth would one day be the death of her; Tori bit her lip.
". . . We are needing to keep children in mind."
The young woman perked up then, her eyes bright at the mention of children. "Kids?" She asked, voice warm, though surprised. She had not pegged the fox for the type to have children. Then again, she had only met him a few minutes ago. "You have pictures?"
Her eyes sparkled.

Fox's eyes lit up when her's did, and he nodded warmly. Even if he wasn't a very good person, he had always loved his children as much as was possible, and most of the stuff he did was for them. He was the type to go hungry if there was only enough food for Krystal and his kids.
"Fox is having pictures, yes," he replied, pulling out a wallet and handing it over to her. Inside, there was one of those fold-out things with the thumbnail photos in it; there were ones of an ice-blue fox kit and a silver fox kit, many showing them with a blue vixen, obviously their mom. "Wife is being Krystal. Little girl is being Marissa, and boy is being Jeremy. They take after mother, eh?" Fox smiled.

Tori nearly squealed when he handed over the wallet, her eyes brightening with pure delight. Luckily, she had enough sense to keep her voice down, and instead merely squeaked. She opened the wallet, flipping to the pictures, and expanded the flippy thing.
Immediately, she let out a light gasp.
"Oh, they're so beautiful!" She said, giggling softly. She wriggled where she was sitting, child-like fascination appearing behind her adult features, "They do look a lot like their mother, but the little girl... She has your eyes. And the same mischievous glint. And this one, he's definitely got his mother's smile."
If there was one thing in this world Tori would have sacrificed it all for, it was a family. Her mother had always been sick; her father... Her father had scared her siblings away, and then taken out his frustrations on his little girl. Ever since she was little, she had always desired to have a family that didn't turn their backs when times got rough.
"You're so lucky."

Fox was slightly amused. For a woman so calm and collected, she had begun to show her true colors the moment he had mentioned he had children. And it was... nice, really. Not a lot of people in the underground, especially leaders of gangs (which he had figured she was; he didn't know for sure, and it was more likely she was second in command or something along those lines) were fond of kids, and it was somewhat refreshing to know that someone did.
"Thanking you," he murmured softly, both ears relaxing as he did. His tail gave a lighthearted swish as he leaned even farther back against the wall.
After about half an hour, he glanced outside, eyes searching for any sign of the swine or someone else who may have wanted their heads. When he saw none, he looked over to Tori and nodded. "I'm thinking it is being safe now. They having given up, eh?"

Tori looked over the pictures for a good ten minutes or so, her eyes staring wistfully at the beautiful kits. Fox really was a lucky guy, even if he had - apparently - fallen onto hard times, like the rest of them. He had a place to go home to, a mate and children who loved him. It was enough to make her smile.
Once she had handed back the wallet, Tori simply began going through her bag. She organized the coins in her purse, made sure some of the mushrooms survived her dash-to-survive, and then merely sat and waited until her "warehouse buddy" was sure the cops had gone away.
"I'm thinking it is being safe now. They having given up, eh?"
Tori let a smile form on her face, and she nodded once. "They must have. If they haven't found us yet, then odds are they've given up. Not like they were really going to search in the first place." She accented that last part with a nod, and then placed her hands against the wall behind her back. Carefully, she pushed herself up, so she was standing again.
Dusting her hands off, Tori glanced over at him, "Thanks for letting me share your hiding spot for a bit. I really can't afford to be spending any time in jail." There was a sheepish smile on her face.

"Welcoming," Fox said, giving her a polite nod as he helped himself up. The anthro grinned, tilting his head somewhat to the side as he pushed open the halfway-broken door and stepping out into the alley. "I am knowing feeling, eh? Jail... is no good place to be, especially when cops are having no reason to put you there.
"Though that is not saying they could not find one for me." Fox gave her a wink and chuckled, begining to walk away, off into the night. "Sometimes filthy foreign scum... is just as filthy as they are assuming. Seeing you later, bro."
And with that, Fox was gone.

". . . Sometimes filthy foreign scum... is just as filthy as they are assuming."
Tori was just about to comment on that comment when the anthro called her 'bro.' For a moment, she just stared, torn between blurting out a 'thanks?' or some sarcastic comment dealing with the differences between men and woman. But before she could decide on which course of action to take, Fox was already gone, and she was left with the perfect comment just running laps in her head.
"Well that was..." She trailed off, not exactly sure how to finish that; not even in her own head. Giving the warehouse one last, quick glance over her shoulder, Tori fought back a shiver as she stepped into the streets; into the shadows and darkness.
Heading home, she couldn't help but think, Next time, I'm going to have to inform him about the differences between male and female.
