Alex stood near the front of the arena. As was his habit, he was there to watch another Pokemon Battle. Not for the fighting of course, but for the frustration and struggle of the pathetic humans. <Their struggle for the top, their quest to be the best...> Alex chuckled. <All so pointless and futile in the end...>
Still, sometimes the fighting became too brutal, and he would have to excuse himself. Too often, Alex found himself wanting to go stop the fight, stop the hurting. He found it quite revolting, and the fact that it still continued on without any signs of letting up angered him.
Either way, Alex was present, as always. As the sound of an announcer came on, he craned forwards to see who the competitors would be, and what Pokemon would be used

((THIS IS TO APPEASE ALEX. I swear I'll finish her profile tomorrow, and I'm sorry if you're angry I started early. You guys know I wouldn't make an out-of-bounds character. ;-; ))
Today was a good day for a battle.
Hannah was in her usual sort of garb, her hair cut into the bob style she had been favoring lately. She had on a loose-fitting tan jacket, a baggy black t-shirt, ripped jeans, and the traditional "trainer" cap placed backwards on her head. Today, she really did look like a male, though she knew the announcer would correct anyone's suspicions that she was. And call her "lovely" to be ironic.
"We've got a treat for you tonight, ladies and gentlemen! The champ of the ring, the lovely lady Violet, will be initiating a newcomer going by the name of Topaz. Let's have a warm welcome for our champ, ladies and gents!"
The woman grinned, and her grip on Horace and Maxine's chains tightened. She didn't have to tug them to make them follow, though; they knew the routine.
"Okay, you two," she murmured as she stepped into the ring, raising her arms as the applause surrounded her, "Maxine'll, you'll go on first, to take out this chick's first three. Horace, you'll hit her stronger ones, the ones she's savin' for the end. Got it?"
"Let's make her wish she hadn't even heard of Pokemon battles," Maxine snarled happily, whipping her pronged tail as she glanced over to the other side of the ring, where a somewhat nervous-looking (though obviously older) woman was standing.
"Don't go too hard on her, Maxxie," Hannah snorted. "She's just a wittle girl."
"Trainers ready!"
Her eyes widened with the anticipation, and she grinned, bending down on one knee. Hannah's fingers wrapped around the clip on her female Houndoom's collar as Topaz's own found a pokeball on her belt.
"Three! Two! One! BATTLE!"

As the announcer introduced the two competitors, Alex was surprised to see the young woman called Violet. She didn't look like she could be older than early twenties, and yet she seemed to have a sort of confidence about her that indicated otherwise. And he had to chuckle at the announcer's pointing out that she was not a guy.
But what interested him the most was that she did not keep her Pokemon in pokeballs. Something rather unheard of these days. <Sure, they're on a leash, but still,> Alex marveled. <I'm surprised. I haven't seen someone do that in a very long time...> Curious now, he jostled his way to the very front of the ring.
He was able to catch the tail end of her and the Houndoon, and chuckled again. Obviously, this Topaz was in for quite the battle, and Violet sure seemed to know it. "Knock 'em dead!" Alex yelled over the crowd, smiling. This trainer was a little different from the rest, and maybe for once he'd be able to enjoy watching a battle.
Something that, for him, was hard to come by.

""Knock 'em dead!"Hannah laughed happily, then released the clasp from Maxine's collar just as Topaz sent out her own Pokemon: a Skitty. Maxine, as soon as she sensed the freedom, was off like a rocket, her agile body and long limbs carrying her easily to the middle of the arena. The Skitty hissed as it ran to meet her, attempting to perform a Tackle. Maxine dodged this easily, before leaping forward and delivering a nasty bite, jumping away immediately after. "Maxine, Flamethrower!"Topaz looked thoroughly worried. "Skitty, Double-Slap!"Unfortunately for her, Maxine's Flamethrower attack was the first to make contact. The jet of flame burst forth from Houndoom's maw, engulfing the Skitty. As soon as the smoke cleared, the Skitty made a little noise before falling over in a faint. Hannah jumped back, arms raised in triumph as the crowd cheered. But she knew there was more to go. The battle commenced as soon as Topaz let out a Turtwig, who was even easier for Maxine to defeat. She took down a Bibarel in the same fashion, and then there was a brief timeout for both trainers to rest. Maxine padded loyally back to her friend and brother. "Good battle, sister," Horace said, wagging his tail politely. "Yeah, Max. Didn't know you had it in ya." Hannah chuckled as her female Houndoom growled warningly, and shook her head. "Alright, Horace, you get ready. The last few are always the toughest. Though I have a feeling 'toughest' don't mean much here."Horace stood, stretching as Hannah clipped Maxine's chain back on. "I'm prepared."

Alex marveled at how effectively Violet co-ordinated with her Pokemon to quickly and skillfully take out Topaz's. Not only that, but he could feel the open connection the Pokemon had with their trainer. <Sure, they can talk with each other. I've seen it before. But the trust they have, and the closeness... That you don't see anymore,> Alex thought to himself. <Not with the degree of oppression Pokemon experience these days...>
Alex jostled his way so that he was closer to the trainer at the edge of the ring. He didn't know why, but this Violet... she had re-awoken that hope that he had been looking for. It was so hard to find examples of the good in humanity. Sure, the orphanage was a great start. But the harmony, that was something he hadn't seen in centuries.
And he couldn't help but want more.
Having heard the names of the two, he called out, "C'mon, you can do it Horace! Do what your sister did!"

Hannah whipped her head around, a shocked and worried look immediately taking place of the triumphant expression she had worn so proudly before. "How did you know they were--"
"TRAINERS, READY!"
She was shaken out of the shock by this statement, and she shook her head, once again bending down, this to wrap her fingers around Horace's leash clasp while Topaz took out a Pokeball. She just had to... immerse herself in the battle. She could take care of this guy later. And if not...
She was sure her daddy could.
"Three! Two! One! BATTLE!"
Topaz's next Pokemon was a Vileplume, and Hannah almost had to grn at how easy that would be. And she was right. After releasing Horace, the grass Pokemon was taken down without either of them having to try; Horace just had to use his Fire Blast attack. Topaz's fifth Pokemon was a Mightyena, and that was a bit more of a challenge. After the two canines scuffled for a few minutes, biting and snapping and headbutting, Horace delivered a nasty Crunch to the back of its neck and it fainted. Even the Eevee that came next was no contestant, and it wasn't long before Hannah was standing in the middle of the ring with her two Pokemon, being handed a sack of coins for triumphing.
"Let's have a round of applause for our winner, and still champion, Violet!"
Hannah made her way to the back alley that led into the arena, Horace and Maxine following loyally at her heels. After they had announced her win, she had promptly left. That man... that man had given her the creeps. And the last time a man had given her the creeps...
The woman let out a little noise.
She sighed heavily and leaned against an alley wall, trying her best to blend in with the shadows. She just... she just needed to catch her breath. Just needed to rest. She was safe. She had her two best friends with her, creatures that had been raised by her since they were newborn Houndours and she was only five, and she was safe.

Alex chuckled a little when Violet was a little taken aback by what he knew, but she was quickly called back into the battle. <I'd be surprised too I guess,> he smiled to himself. Still, it was impressive to see a second time around, and Horace was just as well coordinated with Violet as Maxine was, and when she emerged victorious Alex cheered.
After the battle finished, Alex was going to go talk to her, but had she quickly departed out of the back door. Curious, he jostled his way through the crowd and finally arrived at the back of the arena. Opening the door, he stepped outside and shut it behind him, turning to look down the alleyway.
Alex was surprised to see Violet leaning against the wall, looking visibly upset. <Crap, maybe this isn't the time...> he thought to himself. Cautiously, he took a few steps forward. "Um, hi," Alex called out. "Uh, is this a bad time? I just wanted to, um, congratulate you... You have a way with your Pokemon that I haven't seen in a very long time, and..." Unsure what to say next, he just stood there and waited for her response.

Hannah nearly jumped out of her skin.
She was ready, completely ready, to start flinging curses and threats and anything she could think of to deter whoever the hell this guy was, but Maxine beat her to it. The female Houndoom was at the end of her chain almost immediately, barking and snarling as loudly as she could.
"STAY BACK!" she roared. "OR I'LL RIP YOUR THROAT OUT, YOU LITTLE--"
"Sister! SISTER!"[/b][/i][/color] Horace jumped forwards, and Maxine immediately backed down, albeit hesitantly. Her brother was, after all, the dominant one; his straighter horns showed that very clearly.
"Why should--"
"He's a Pokemon,"[/b] Hannah murmured in a daze, making Maxine do a double take. The woman looked Alex over. "You're a Pokemon."

Alex took a step back as Maxine strained against her chain to get to him, a half smile on his face. <That's a level of protectiveness you don't see everyday,> he chuckled to himself. Still, he could see the gears turning in the girl's head, and when she affirmed what he was, a grin split across his face. <This one is different!> he laughed.
"Well well, now that's impressive," Alex giggled. "Very few could come to that conclusion, and most would be other Pokemon. But judging from how you carry yourself, and the way you care for your Pokemon, I'd say you're not the typical run-of-the-mill Pokemon trainer."
Alex snapped his fingers, and he reappeared in his Latios costume. "As you might already know, I'm a Latios," he smiled. "Not that I show off my actual form to just anyone. I think this will suffice for now."
"Anyhow, pleasantries aside, I've got to ask," Alex said, sitting down on a box in the alley. "Why are you so open with your Pokemon? I mean, I've been around a long time, and I haven't seen your level of open-ness with Horace and Maxine in a very long time. And it's gotta make me wonder why."

"I, um, I..." Hannah averted her eyes nervously, instead deciding to focus on her apparently very interesting shoe. She couldn't stop the shaking of her hands even if she really tried. Though he was a Pokemon... Well, she was still somewhat uncomfortable around him.
He was also a man.
"I was raised with them," she finally managed to choke out, looking back up at him but keeping her head somewhat lowered. "My daddy gave them to me when I was five, and... I could always communicate with Pokemon. So they're like my siblings. My other siblings. They're really only on the chains so I don't get in trouble for them not being in Pokeballs..." At this, Horace nuzzled her leg, and Maxine gave her a gentle lick on her fingertips. The woman took in and released a deep breath, willing herself to calm down.

Alex’s smile widened. He was chalking up Violet’s shyness due to what he was, and was far more interested in what she had told him. “So you’ve always been able to understand Pokemon…” he said. “That’s a gift I haven’t seen before. I mean, I’ve seen people who are able to communicate with their Pokemon, but after many years of practice. I’ve never heard of someone who could just talk to Pokemon since birth…”
“Huh. This is the second time in a week I’ve seen a talent I’d never heard of before… Maybe there’s an influx of special people this century…” Alex thought out loud. “I haven’t seen this sorta thing since two centuries ago… Or was it three?” He shook his head and began to pace to clear his thoughts and get back to his second point.
“It’s nice to see a trainer who doesn’t like Pokeballs either,” Alex smiled. “Disgusting invention… Did you know how much pandemonium there was when they were invented? Trainers running everywhere, trying to capture every single Pokemon in sight… They had no chance.” Sighing, he turned back to Violet to see what she thought.

Hannah sort of shook her head, eyes averting once again. "I never liked them much, but the breeder that gave us Horace and Maxine used them. They say they're not so bad, but... I prefer them to be out here with me.
"See... people can't speak with the Pokemon like me, but you already knew that. And I think... I think its hard for others to see them as anything other then animals when that's all they really seem like to them. A Pokemon can learn human speech, but it takes a lot of dedication and training. It's the same the other way around." The woman frowned, her eyes seeming... sad, but oddly empty, in a way. She shook her head. "If we can't communicate, we can't understand, and so... and so they become animals."
All of a sudden, something struck her, and she tilted her head to the side. "Sir, I don't think I ever got a name."

Alex's smile had returned with her comment. "Finally, someone who gets what I'm saying!" he grinned. "You should have seen the arguement I had the other day with this lady over how people don't regard us as equal and abuse that view to make us animals. Was quite the conversation, if I do say so myself."
"Then again, I did level a few accusations about humanity in general... Yeah, maybe that's why that didn't go over so well..." Alex chuckled."But she was quite stubborn... Either way, I agree. When a group can't communicate with another, it's only a matter of time before one becomes sub-class to another. Too often this has happened in history, and for Pokemon it was no different."
Alex laughed when he realized he hadn't given Violet his name. "How rude of me," he chuckled. "I go by Alex 'round these parts, so as to blend in." He extended a hand out for Violet to shake."And let me tell you, it's a pleasure to meet ya."

Hannah took his hand, a hint of a smile appearing on the very edge of her lips, and shook it. Even if she was still nervous... well, he was a bit easier to be around. She didn't mind it so much.
Even if she could hear Maxine's low growling in the background.
"It's nice to meet you, too, Alex," she said, finally making eye contact. "I... I know I must seem a hell of a lot different then how I am onstage, but... I haven't had such awesome experiences with people outside my little family unit. You'll have to forgive me for being afraid of you."

Alex chuckled. "Don't worry, I know all about that sort of thing," he commented. "One has their fair share of bad experiences when you've lived as long as I have... And sometimes you lose that family unit along the way..." Alex let the sentence trail off and fade away, lost in a memory for the moment.
"Do you think anyone ever thinks twice about us?" Alice asked giddily, twirling around as they walked down the street. "Maybe not at first, but they will if you keep bouncing around like that!" Alex laughed. She play-pouted. "Awwww, but that's no fun! It's much more interesting to run around and be free!" Alice giggled, running ahead. "Get back here!" Alex laughed, chasing after her.
Alex suddenly snapped back to the present, now aware he had been staring at the wall behind Hannah's head. "Sorry about that," he sighed. "Sometimes I... let myself get lost in my head. Certain things sorta set off memories for me... " Alex looked down for a moment, a little ashamed he'd let himself get caught up like that.
